Soleil et Amis

A Hemp Swimwear Collection

Soleil et Amis was born out of a desire for synthetic-free swimwear. Sustainability can mean so many things, but in swimwear, we often see it accomplished through recycled nylon or polyester and ethical labor practices. Unfortunately, even if materials come from recycled post-consumer waste, microplastics are released from these fabrics every time we put these suits through the wash. These microplastics are harmful to marine life and human life. We need a new way to show sustainability in swimwear.

These bathing suits are made using a fabric blend of hemp, cotton, and lycra and knitted to made a jersey. Lycra is a synthetic fabric that adds stretch to any fabric. The pattern pieces were designed by me, cut, and handpainted using DEKA silk paints. The lining fabric is a jersey cotton and hemp blend. I used elastic in some suits and neglected it in others. I used lace as trim in all three to accentuate a girly effect to these silhouettes. Each print was inspired by warm summer breezes, sunshine, and what it means to be joyful with your friends.

Made in February 2023. Photographed by Eleanor Malecki. Modeled by Amanda Rodier, Emma Street, and Fiona Duffy
